What is Inversion : Inversion คือ ??

อาจมีบางครั้งที่ พวกเราเคยเห็นรูปแบบประโยค แปลกๆ ที่เอา กริยาช่วย (auxiliary verb) มาวางไว้หน้าประธาน หน้าตาประโยคแบบนี้ นี่แหล่ะค่ะ ที่เราเรียกว่า Inversion

Inversion คือ การสลับทีระหว่างประธานและกริยา หรือ เรียกให้เข้าใจง่ายๆ ก็คือ การกลับประโยค ในภาษาอังกฤษเมื่อต้องการเน้นย้ำ ซึ่งขึ้นอยู่กับว่าผู้เขียนต้องการที่จะเน้นอะไร หรือทำให้ประโยคเป็นทางการมากขึ้น อย่างเช่น งานเขียน บทกลอน บทประพันธ์   มักจะใช้ รูปแบบของ การกลับประโยค นี่เอง 

เป็นที่ทราบกันดีอยู่แล้ว ว่า รูปแบบประโยคโดยทั่วไปมักจะเป็น  ==>   ประธาน + กริยา + กรรม
แต่ inversion .==> adverb+ กริยาช่วย+ ประธาน+ กริยาหลัก
Standard order – He didn’t realise he had been tricked until the following day.
Inverted order – Not until the following day did he realise he had been tricked.

การเรียงลำดับของคำจะเปลี่ยนไปค่ะ โดยจะเรียง  ดังนี้

Adverbial / Negative Expressions + Auxiliary verb + Subject 

The word order is inverted: the negative adverbial is placed first, an auxiliary verb follows it and the subject of the sentence comes next.

The inversion of the subject and the verb can take place after a clause that begins with the following :

• Time adverbials:
  Never (before)
  Rarely …when/before
  Seldom …when/before
  Barely …when/before
  Hardly …when/before
  Scarcely…when/before
  No sooner….than

• ‘Only’ a time expression:
  Only when …
  Only after…

• Negative expressions:
  Under/ In no circumstances…
  Under/ In no way…

• Expressions starting with ‘Not…’ :
  Not a noun
  Not only…. but also
  Not until…

• ‘Little’ with a negative meaning
  

Look at the following examples:

Never have I encountered such rudeness!
(extract from a letter of complaint about the service in a restaurant)
Not only is Amanda Swift a gifted musician, but she is also good-natured and responsible. (extract from a covering letter)
No sooner had he locked the door than the phone started ringing.
Only when the last person had left did she sit down and try to relax.
Under no circumstances can you inform the staff about the imminent changes.
Little does Michael suspect that his daughter has been failing all her subjects at school!

It is common to invert sentence using negative, ‘restrictive’ words such as those in the list below for more example:

hardly ever	Hardly ever had there been such a shortage of water.
never	Never had the President had to make such a difficult decision.
little	Little did she know time was running out.
scarcely ever	Scarcely ever have they had to wait for anything.
only by	Only by learning to type will he improve in his job.
under no circumstances	Under no circumstances is the prisoner to have visitors.
only in this way	Only in this way can we be sure to avoid repeating the problem in the future.
on no account	On no account is John to be given any money.
scarcely	Scarcely has they left the building when the bomb went off.
not only	Not only had he broken the law but he was also unrepentant.
seldom	Seldom have I seen such wealth.
nowhere	Nowhere else is there such an abundance of natural resources.
not until	Not until the end of the nineteenth century, did plant breeding became a scientific discipline.
